Rachael Dewar - Principal
Rachael established Rachael Dewar Law in 2010. She was a partner for 12 years at Tripe Matthews & Feist of Wellington, leading the Family Law team and has over 30 years experience specialising in this area. She has expertise in all aspects including relationship property, pre-nuptial agreements, parenting and relocation, adoption and surrogacy arrangements.
As a senior Lawyer for Child and an accredited FDR (Family Dispute Resolution) Mediator she has many years hands-on experience in the court mediation role. Rachael is a long standing member of the Wellington branch Family Law Committee of the NZ Law Society and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the NZLS. In November 2019, Rachael was Chair of the NZLS Family Law Conference, attended by over 400 family lawyers and other experts from NZ and overseas.

Emma Va'ai - Associate
Emma joined Rachael Dewar Law in January 2021 as an Associate after more than 15 years’ experience in family law. Emma has experience in all areas of family law including relationship property, contracting out agreements (pre-nups), care of children, PPPR, adoptions, family violence and Oranga Tamariki matters. She also receives appointments from the Court in her role as Lawyer for Child. Emma has a background in general practice so has a sound understanding of trusts, property and business matters which she draws on in her relationship property work.
Emma is empathetic and practical. She is motivated to assist clients to achieve realistic, lasting outcomes.

Amy Gulbransen - Associate
Amy joined Rachael Dewar Law in July 2018 after spending a number of years specialising in family law in Nelson. She has experience in all aspects of family law with a particular interest in relationship property matters.
Amy has invaluable experience acting in a wide range of cases before the Family Court, including Relationship Property, Care of Children, Family Violence and Oranga Tamariki.
Amy is the Wellington Regional Representative for the Family Law Section, a member of the Wellington Family Courts’ Association and volunteers at the Wellington Community Law Centre. Amy graduated from Canterbury University in 2010 and was admitted to the bar in 2013 after spending some time travelling and working overseas.

Louisa Jackson - Solicitor
Louisa joined Rachael Dewar Law in August 2020 as a solicitor specialising in all areas of family law, with a special interest in matters relating to children. Louisa is driven by a desire to help clients navigate challenges with clarity and confidence. She is experienced in complex litigation and legal issues and draws on this background to provide practical and clear advice to help clients resolve disputes in a positive and efficient way. If it becomes necessary to go to Court, Louisa is an able litigator.
Louisa graduated from Victoria University in 2014 with a first class Honours degree in Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Policy. She has published academic articles relating to child protection and mental health issues. She is also an active mother of two children and enjoys being part of a diverse and vibrant family. Louisa understands the challenges presented by family conflict, is empathetic, and committed to finding the best possible solutions for her clients.

Ruby Hey - Solicitor
Ruby joined Rachael Dewar Law in March 2019 as a law clerk and was admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor in June 2019. Ruby has experience in a range of family law areas including relationship property, Contracting Out Agreements (pre-nups), care of children, family violence and dissolution of marriage. She is passionate about helping clients through difficult situations and strives to provide practical and sound advice.
Ruby acts for private clients as well as those eligible for legal aid. She is a member of the Family Section of the New Zealand Law Society and the Wellington Family Courts’ Association. She also volunteers at the Wellington Community Law Centre during the Family Law sessions. She was previously involved in the Student Rights Service as part of the Community Justice Project. There she provided information to parents struggling with issues relating to their children’s school.
Ruby graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in May 2019 with a conjoint degree in Bachelor of Law and Arts, majoring in International Relations and Political Science.

Kusum Ravji – Practice Manager
Kusum joined Rachael Dewar Law in August 2019. She holds a Bachelor of Business Studies and her background is in financial management with both the private and public sector. Kusum has over 15 years’ experience in the legal industry as a Practice Manager and Accountant in financial reporting, payroll and human resource management.
Kusum is responsible for maintaining work systems, procedures, policies and compliance with Anti-Money Laundering regulations. Other duties include overseeing and improvement of practice operations, debtor management and financial administration.
She is also available to answer any administrative queries you may have with your file. This enables the rest of the team to focus on client matters.
